The modern, digital version of picking slips of paper out of a hat is a wheel of names, though it is much faster and entirely transparent, which makes it much more exciting to everyone in the room. It can be a teacher who chooses a student to answer a question, a host who runs a giveaway live, a streamer who rewards his/her loyal viewers, or a game team leader who gives each of the participants a task to complete, the wheel of names will turn a regular decision-making into a collective experience of pure anticipation.
It doesn't need any sign-up, no download and is fully functional on all current browsers, desktop, tablet, and mobile alike. All one has to do is enter your names in the list at the right and press the big spin button and watch the colorful wheel spin down to a single winner. The ticking noise creates suspense, applause punishes the moment and confetti turns it into a celebration each and every time.
The Wheel of Names: Step by Step.
This random name picker takes less than thirty seconds to start. On the right hand panel, go to Entries tab and enter or paste your names one on a line. The wheel is live and will keep on updating with the segment of each individual as you type. When you have your list ready, just press the button, "Spin the Wheel" or just press Space or Enter in your keyboard. The wheel can also be clicked so that it spins. Once the wheel is completed the name of this winner appears in bold mode with the option of continuing to spin, eliminating the winner in future spins or erase the entire list and begin anew. The Results tab maintains a dynamic record of all the winners in the order, with details of timestamps. This would work best with multi-prize raffle, classroom attendance monitoring or any other event where transparency is important. The Settings tab also allows you to enable and disable the ticking sound, applause, and confetti separately and set the spin length between 2 -10 seconds to the amount of suspense you would like to create.
Why the Ticking Sound Makes All the Difference.
The most psychologically useful thing about any random name picker is the peculiar tick-tick-tick sound of the wheel falling slower. It copies the noise of a real world prize wheel, a casinos roulette table, or a game show spinner, both of which are also using sound expectation to create anticipation and keep one’s attention. The ticking volume may be adjusted independently in the Settings panel, and thus, you can set it just right to your classroom speaker, venue PA system, or laptop microphone when you are on a virtual call.
Foolproof on Classrooms and Teachers.
The largest number of individuals who use the wheel of names tools daily is represented by the teachers. The essence lies in the simplicity of the fact that the wheel eradicates the concept of bias by the teachers in calling the students. It is when all are able to observe the spinning of the wheel in real time on a smartboard or a projected screen, or maybe even a shared browser tab, that students accept the result as truly random. Such confidence is valuable than any application. In case students are aware that the wheel will fall on any of them at any one time, they remain attentive, ready, and involved during the lesson. To manage the whole time of the classroom, this tool is to be used in combination with our special Classroom Timer and Presentation Timer.
In the case of Giveaways, Raffles, Live Streams, and Events.
Twitch and YouTube streamers, content creators, and event organizers; brand marketers all use spin-the-wheel tools to select the winners in the most transparent and engaging manner. Contrary to a spreadsheet or any other random number generator on the personal computer, a spinning wheel on the screen provides viewers with the physical assurance that the selection process is fair. All entrants are able to watch the wheel spin, slow down and observe the point at which their name will or will not be called. It is this aesthetic justice that makes giveaway wheels so reliable to audience.
Each spin of our wheel is determined by the inbuilt cryptographic random number generator of the browser which is used to select the winning part of the wheel. Each name takes up precisely equal portion of the wheel no matter the length of the name and therefore a short name such as Bo and a long name such as Bartholomew have the same chance of winning on any spin.
Winner Removal and Results History Log.
In multi-winner events, which are drawing several prizes consecutively, running a tournament bracket, creating a presentation schedule or allocating a week of classroom work, the "Remove from Wheel" feature is indispensable. When one is spun, it is immediately eliminated with the "Remove from Wheel" button in the winner modal which removes that name immediately, so that until everyone has been spun, no one can win twice. All winners removed in sequence are shown in the Results tab which provides you with a permanent, printable record of the whole draw. To generate random names outside of the wheel, go to our Random Name Generator.
More Uses of Your Name Picker Random Names.
The wheel of names is much more practical than it may seem. It is commonly used as a basic student picker or raffle wheel by most people but communities all over the world have invented creative uses which far exceed both of those uses.
Team Building and Group Work
Write all names of the participants on the wheel and spin to give roles, appoint team captains or set the order of speaking in a standup meeting. The spin wheel brings a fun aspect to otherwise a bland rotation schedule to HR teams and remote-first companies. A single spin to select the facilitator of the retrospective, another spin to select the first person to present their work, and archive all the assignments in the Results panel to the records of a sprint. To have meetings that should not go wayward, you can mix this wheel with our Meeting Timer.
Breaking Decision Fatigue and Decision-Making.
The truth behind decision fatigue is that decision making is a real cognitive drain, the more the decisions we make during a day, the more the strain each new decision places on us. The picker wheel of name is a beautiful one. Rather than using names, place your choices on the wheel: the places to have lunch, workouts, coursework, movies, activities to do over the weekend. Turn once and devote oneself to the outcome. The randomized eliminates the mental stress of making a decision and puts you in high gear. When the wheel selects a study subject, install our Pomodoro Timer and select a focus session of 25 minutes and get immersed in it.
Remote Events, Webinars and Virtual Meetings.
By sharing the screen of the wheel of names during a Zoom call or a session with Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, it will produce a collective visual experience that remote participants will take pleasure in. It does not provide the same level of tediosity as one-after-another meetings, introduces the element of a game-show to otherwise boring check-ins, and makes the process of the selection look rather transparent to all participants on the call. Virtual giveaways, quiz games, or icebreakers: Hosts hosting any of these games will be much more engaged with the spinning wheel than just calling out a random number.
Parties, Family Activities and Games.
Game nights in the family, birthday party activities, icebreakers activities in the office and just friend group decisions are places where a neutral spinning arbiter is advantageous. Assign names to the players on the rotating wheel to determine who goes first in a board game, who decides the next movie to watch in a movie night, who draws first in a game of Pictionary or who has to play an embarrassing truth or dare. The wheel eliminates the clumsy negotiation and in its place it introduces a thirty-second rotation that everyone can laugh about it.
Sports, Tournaments, Competition Brackets.
The wheel makes random matches between teams, assigns lanes or courts, and drafts team structures without controversy among sports coaches, PE teachers and tournament planners. And when sportsmen are able to observe the draw in real time - not relying on the list which will be sent via mail the previous day but directly observing the draw - the feeling of justice will be instant. Spin to choose jersey number, spin to choose warm-up drill... The uses in the competitive environments are virtually unlimited.
The Science of the Real True Randomness.
Each rotation of our name picker wheel utilizes crypto.getRandomValues() which is the very cryptographic random number generating mechanism that Web browsers rely on in security sensitive operations. This is not just a call to Math.random() but rather is based on operating-system-level sources of entropy which are in fact unpredictable. The total rotation angle is calculated once each spin and this is prior to the commencement of the animation process, that is, the result is not affected by when you press the button or the duration of time you view the spinning of the wheel. The outcome is obtained the minute you press the button and the animation only shows it. This structure allows each and every player the fair and fair chance of being chosen at any given spin.
